Inventing the Future of RVing with Mark Ng

Mark Ng, a full time RVer and inventor from Oregon.

Travel and adventure take many forms, and the RV lifestyle is no exception. In this week’s episode of RV Out West, we sit down with Mark, a full-time RVer, inventor, and entrepreneur whose journey highlights the many ways people choose to live life on the road. Some RVers travel nonstop, others settle into a seasonal rhythm, and many choose a hybrid approach—moving when inspired and staying put when it feels right. Mark has lived all three versions, giving him a rare and insightful perspective on the evolving world of full-time RVing.

Mark shares why he chose RV life, how his travels have shaped him, and what he loves most about exploring the Pacific Northwest. From rugged coastlines to quiet artsy towns, he walks us through the places that continue to energize his spirit and fuel his curiosity. But Mark isn’t just an RVer—he’s also an inventor working on a product that could genuinely revolutionize the RV industry. While he’s not ready to reveal everything just yet, he offers a glimpse into the problem he’s solving and why his idea could change the way RVers live when they are on the road.

Episode Show Notes

In this episode of RV Out West, we talk with Mark — a full-time RVer, inventor, and entrepreneur — about life on the road, balancing mobility with stability, and building something new for the RV world.

Journey & RV Life

  • Mark was born in England and moved to the U.S. in 2009. After years in Phoenix, by 2020 he transitioned into full-time RV living.

  • He spent an initial stretch traveling the Northeast, Midwest, Southwest and up the West Coast before landing in Portland, Oregon, using it as his home base.

From Software Engineer to RV-Innovator

  • Formerly a software engineer, Mark shifted gears after being laid off — now he’s designing smart-home lighting solutions for RVs. He’s prototyping a system allowing dynamic lighting control by phone, scheduling, mood settings, and more — tailored for trailer and RV usage.

RV Setup & Realities

  • His first rig was a No Boundaries 16.7 trailer towed by a Nissan Xterra; now he’s living in a 2023 Cougar 25RDS. Through upgrades he learned how payload matters more than towing capacity when living on the road.

  • He reflects honestly: living full-time in an RV is slower and less mobile than he expected — but it offers opportunities to deeply explore places rather than just drive through them.

Pacific Northwest Highlights

  • Mark recommends trips to coastal Oregon and especially loves Tillamook, Oregon — often staying via Blue Heron French Cheese Company (a host site listed on Harvest Hosts) for easy coast RV stays. Harvest Hosts

  • He has a soft spot for arts-driven small cities — particularly Ashland, Oregon. He visits regularly to catch plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Oregon Shakespeare Festival

  • One place still on his bucket list: Crater Lake National Park — with hopes to visit (maybe even bike) soon. He mentions the “Ride the Rim” bike-around-the-lake event. National Park Service

What’s Next

  • Mark is diving into his electronics and creative side: collaborating on 3D-printed parts and smart lighting, and starting small-batch production and design work out of a Portland maker space.

  • He’s also teaming up with a partner working in ceramics; together they plan to run a combined studio space mixing art and practical RV-living tools.
