Golf, RV Camping and a Lazy River

Located in Roseburg, Oregon, Bar Run combines an RV resort with an 18-hole golf course and a large pool complex featuring a lazy river.

Brooks shares his family's experience staying at the resort, including spending time at the pool with his kids and playing golf with his son. Rather than spending the entire trip away from the campground exploring, the family found themselves enjoying a relaxed, resort-style RV vacation right at the property.

The episode explores what makes Bar Run different from a traditional campground and why it may appeal to RVers looking for a Southern Oregon RV getaway where there's plenty to do without having to constantly pack up and leave.

The Story Behind Bar Run

Cris explains how the Guido family transformed land that had previously been used for mining into the golf course and RV resort.

The golf course opened with 10 holes in 2021 before all 18 holes were completed in 2022. The RV resort was developed alongside it, with additional amenities and accommodations continuing to be added.

Cris also talks about the family's connection to the local community and the goal of creating a destination resort that provides guests with a relaxing and memorable experience.

What's It Like Staying at Bar Run?

Brooks and Cris discuss what RVers can expect when they arrive, including:

  • Large, level concrete RV sites

  • 30-amp and 50-amp hookups

  • An 18-hole golf course

  • Pool complex and lazy river

  • Family-friendly atmosphere

  • Tiny homes

  • Seasonal and shoulder-season camping

  • Access to the South Umpqua River

  • Opportunities for fishing and outdoor recreation

  • Community activities and gatherings

The conversation also gets into what changes during the shoulder and off-season, when the resort becomes quieter and longer-term guests have more opportunities to get to know their fellow campers.

RV Camping During the Shoulder Season

One of the interesting parts of the conversation is how the experience at Bar Run can change outside of the busy summer season.

Cris describes a stronger sense of community among longer-term guests, including potlucks, pizza nights and other activities. The resort also serves as a base camp for fishing guides and their customers taking advantage of the nearby South Umpqua.

For RVers who enjoy a slower pace and getting to know other campers, the shoulder season may offer a very different experience from a busy summer weekend.

The Bar Run Golf Course

Golf is a major part of the Bar Run experience, and Brooks talks with Cris about how the course came together.

The course was designed by Dan Hixon, a Pacific Northwest golf course architect whose work includes Bandon Crossings.

Cris shares his favorite hole, No. 18, while Brooks shares a few stories from his own round with his son, including an impressive number of golf balls donated to the course's water hazards.

More Than Just an RV Resort

Bar Run is continuing to expand, with plans discussed in the episode for additional RV spaces and amenities, including pickleball courts.

The resort currently has 74 spaces and has approval for additional development. The long-term goal is to continue building Bar Run into a destination-style RV resort where visitors can come to relax, enjoy the amenities and spend time together.

Family-Friendly RV Camping in Oregon

One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is that Bar Run is intentionally designed to be family friendly.

Cris emphasizes that the resort wants families, kids and grandparents to enjoy the property together. Brooks also talks about bringing his own family and dogs during their Fourth of July stay.

For RVers looking for family-friendly camping in Southern Oregon, Bar Run offers a combination of outdoor recreation and resort amenities that can make staying at the campground part of the vacation rather than simply a place to sleep.

That's exactly what we found in Roseburg at Bar Run Golf and RV resort. And honestly, there's a little more to this place than just golf. From the moment we pulled in, I had a feeling this was going to be one of those stops where the campground itself becomes part of the adventure. Not only am I going to share our camping experiences, but we are going to chat with Chris, the General manager, to learn about the history of this RV resort, get the story behind the golf course and how one epic pool, complete with a lazy river, really is the main attraction. And who better to answer those questions than someone who knows this place inside and out? Joining me is Chris Risley, the general manager of Bar Run Golf and RV resort. Chris, welcome to RV Out West.

Brooks, Host Thanks for having me. Yes. Tell us a little bit about yourself, kind of what's your story?

Cris, Bar Run I'm born and raised here locally. Uh, then I went in the military for twenty three years, uh, and then retired, came back home, worked at the country club golf course nearby here for about seven years. Then I met with a family and then they brought me over to bar run to to run the golf course and stuff.

Brooks, Host So that's great. And then what branch of the military were you in Air Force? Oh, nice. Okay. Well, thank you for your service. That's awesome. Was the RV lifestyle something you were already familiar with kind of before joining.

Brooks, Host Bar Run, or did this job introduce you to the RV world?

Cris, Bar Run It basically introduced me to it really didn't really do a lot of RVing. Uh, before that this, this job really brought it brought it to the forefront for me.

Brooks, Host And because of this job, did you, have you got your own RV now?

Cris, Bar Run Oh yeah, I do now. A little toy hauler.

Brooks, Host So tell me about some of the adventures you've gone in, in that rig of yours.

Cris, Bar Run Typically, I would go over so I do a lot in the outdoors. I go, uh, archery hunting. So I load the side, side by side or the quad in the back of here and go over to central Oregon and, uh, kind of basically boondock out there for the month of September.

Brooks, Host So your toy hauler, you're using that as a base camp for when you're out on your, um, fall archery hunts. Is that kind of, do you have any other times you've taken your rig out and used it? Or is that mostly primarily the purpose for your toy hauler?

Cris, Bar Run I've taken it to we've gone to some pro-ams, uh, down in Medford area and I'll and I'll take it down there and stay in that some RV parks.

Brooks, Host So you've kind of gotten to experience a lot of the Pacific Northwest then. So what are some of your favorite places that you've personally Arvid or camped?

Cris, Bar Run I actually like out in the woods a little bit more. Okay. Out in the boondocks. I mean, out there, it's a lot. To me it's more fun.

Brooks, Host Okay. Well, well, tell tell me about. Go ahead. Tell me some places. Is it are we talking bend? Are we talking sisters? Are we talking farther east? Are we talking, John de? What kind of area are you talking about?

Cris, Bar Run For the most part, I go over to Chemult, just off of ninety seven, seven miles up ninety seven or one thirty eight hits the, uh, hits it and go up there and take a right and go out in the woods there.

Brooks, Host And then what kind of activities and things are you doing when you're out there? Are you hiking? Are you, you know, scouting for September hunts? What do you what kind of things are you doing?

Cris, Bar Run Sometimes it's chilling. It's actually all the above, like going out, chilling out in the woods, like going with the go, cruising the different road systems, seeing, just exploring. I like finding the old camps that the old hunting camps or the old logging position, things that they've done out there. Um, it's pretty and of course we're scouting So.

Brooks, Host Yeah.

Cris, Bar Run For both deer and elk.

Brooks, Host I was just reading the other day about a place I'm actually looking up on my phone really quick called and it's in eastern Oregon and it's a stone corral, I guess this book by Bill Kit from Trail Driver to Cowboy Hall of Fame. References. The stone corral used in the early years of cattle ranching by his family. Have you ever heard of this place? I've never heard of it.

Cris, Bar Run No, I have, haven't. We kind of need to go look at it, though. Check it out.

Brooks, Host Yeah, I totally want to go check it out. It sounds really cool. So what have those experiences about your RVing and your camping out there in central East Oregon have taught you about what makes a campground or RV resort really good?

Cris, Bar Run Well, I think that, uh, you know, obviously for in situations like ours, I think what makes ours pretty good is that it's, it's our big flat level concrete spaces, uh, good amenities. You know, we got the fifty amp, thirty amp hookups, and just all the little the little things I think really make it really, really good.

Brooks, Host Yeah, it was really interesting. Um, I would agree with everything you said. When we came down over the Fourth of July, we had intentions to go to the Wild Safari Park there in Roseburg. We when we pulled in, the kids were like, ooh, in and out. Let's go to in and Out. We don't typically do that kind of resort camp where you go off to go hiking and use our trailer as our base camp. And this was the first time really where we felt like we were at an all inclusive resort and it was just kind of sleep in and, you know, bacon and eggs and coffee in the morning. And then my daughter was in line at, you know, nine fifty to go get spots by the pool. And then we just kind of had a pool day. And then my son and I would go golf. It was just this like lazy vacation day. That was not at all what we typically do when we go RVing. So it was a different for us, but it was much more kind of relaxing in that sense.

Cris, Bar Run That's great to hear. That's exactly what we want. We want people to get here. Just enjoy the day.

Brooks, Host So take us back to when our run first entered the picture for you. What was it about this place that grabbed your attention?

Cris, Bar Run It was the family. To be fair, the Guido family is there. They're just amazing people. Real salt of the earth. They own operated sandal, gravel, sand and gravel company. Concrete company. Just pillars of the community. And so starting talking with them, they're going to they, they had to do a land reclamation of where they mined all this property. And so they said, oh, let's build a golf course and a RV resort. They had no idea it was going to be what it turned out to be. Uh, we first opened the golf course ten July of twenty one, and we had opened with ten holes. RV Park was still being built out at that point in July tenth of twenty twenty two. We opened up all eighteen holes and we just started to open up the RV park at that point. Pool wasn't done yet. The laundry facility was, uh, so was the RV check in and most of the spaces were done. Uh, we still had a few. One side of the park wasn't quite done. Uh, finished that up yet. We started with, uh, four tiny homes on the, on the, that we have. We since then added two more. We just keep developing a little bit, chunking out a little more here, a little more there. Finally, this is the second year the pool's been open, which I mean, we they wanted something a little bit more than just a little, you know, a rectangle pond. Uh, and they didn't think it was going to be as nice as the pool is.

Brooks, Host It's incredible.

Cris, Bar Run Just didn't know. And it just kept going and going and going. And yeah, it's, it's a pretty neat thing. I like to tell people that, uh, it's a good way to lose four and a half hours out of your day.

Brooks, Host one hundred percent.

Cris, Bar Run Yeah. So every time I go in there, it's I think I'm just going to go for a minute and it's four hours later like, well, where did that go?

Brooks, Host I love it. Yeah. That's true. Well, so I kind of spilled the beans a little bit, but I want to hear it from you. Take me through what it's like to arrive at bar run for the first time. What do people see? What do will they notice? What does it feel like.

Cris, Bar Run When you pull in at first? I mean, you probably experience it because you drive through this little residential area, which was it's interesting with that is that the family owned all of that. Like Kelly, who's the the owner here, his his parents owned all the way out to the main road. In fact, there's Camino Francisco and Camino Nino. Nina. That's the that's his mother and father. They're their street names in there. So then they've they've sold off some of that. But people, you know, you just pull down like, oh, what's there's really going to be nothing here. You drive into the sand and gravel spot and it's like, oh, there's these big ponds and stuff and hazelnut orchard there. They had some cherries in there. Had to take those out. But, uh, you come in and it's like, oh, this, you see this concrete factory and you make the left hand turn. It's like, oh, well, there's something kind of cool out there. There's some green grass. And then people really get that really big aha moment as you're coming in by the driving range and hole fourteen, you make a right hand sweeping right hand turn and you're dead into the park there. And it's like, oh, wow, there's this is really nice over here. Pull into then we got a little spot. You pull in, uh, to check in at the RV office and then you start, it's where we give you your packet and all that other stuff, check in thing. And it's, that's where you start to see, well, well, this is like an oasis out here because you don't expect that this is here after everything you drive in on and you see the lazy river right there, the pool complex, pretty, pretty neat.

Brooks, Host And you absolutely described it to a tee because that was the comments in my truck as we were driving not through the residential area, but once we kind of got through that residential. And then yeah, there's the sand and gravel and the quarry and all of that area and you're like, oh, and then you round that corner and it's like this big reveal of an aha moment where you're like, okay, this place looks really cool. So a lot of excitement then happened once we, we did round that corner. If you had to explain the personality of Bar Run, what would you say?

Cris, Bar Run Our personality. We like to we just want to make every, every guest experience to be memorable and fun. That's that's kind of what we want. Good, good, relaxing, uh, aspect because we, we truly would. I mean, you, you, your experience is exactly what we want. You know, we have a golf course in an RV resort. It's like, do people come for the golf or the, or the and stay in the RV or the coming when the RVs took off or they. You know what I mean? Or is they are RVing. Oh hey, I'm all golf and get into the pool. But that is our main goal is just to make. We just want everyone to have a good time to really enjoy themselves.

Brooks, Host Yeah. And, and yeah, I mean, that was absolutely our experience. What does someone who stays at bar run for a month or longer get to experience that someone staying for perhaps a few nights probably doesn't?

Cris, Bar Run Oh, that's a, that's a tough one. Uh, well, sadly, typically the, the ones that would stay for a month, they're going to be in what we call our shoulder or off season after the polls closed. Is this pretty? It does get pretty. We're pretty packed during the main season.

Brooks, Host But. So I guess it's not just about the resort, but the overall area, you know? And as you roll into fall and the onset with with winter coming and, you know, the, the changing of the seasons, the changing of the. The light, the way the sunlight hits different, you know? Do you think what kind of experience, regardless of whether the pool is closed or they're golfers or they're not golfers, you know, do you think they're how was their experience perhaps a little different than somebody who comes from, say, Fourth of July? You know, is there more community or are they, you know, finding out in their getting together and being like, hey, come on over to my camp, let's play dominoes or let's play some cards tonight. And you know what? Like, what is that? That's, I guess kind of what I'm I'm looking to find out.

Cris, Bar Run Yeah, yeah.

Brooks, Host See what that's like from a camper perspective.

Cris, Bar Run They, they, we get a lot of that community involvement because it's, it's not as many people, uh, so they tend to get more friendly with people. They, you know, they don't know, didn't come with. And a lot of times, you know, they'll, they'll get together and they'll do potlucks and our golf tent over there, a little bit more community stuff. We try to do pizza nights. So we have a we have a one of the guys on staff is in the middle of getting his pizza truck going where it's wood fired pizza. We got a wood fire oven over there. He'll do those made to order, things like that. We're trying to. We we get that going a little bit more a little bit more community side of it. And we get fishing guides. We'll they'll base camp out or bring their customers into here because they have. We have right. We have a spot here in the South Umpqua that they can they can put their boat in and, and whatnot. So.

Brooks, Host And are they fishing just out of curiosity, is it like fly fishing for trout or are there salmon running up through the Umpqua rivers?

Cris, Bar Run Steelhead. Steelhead bass.

Brooks, Host Yeah. Okay, cool. We've heard from Chris about some of his favorite places to camp in Eastern Oregon. He shared the history of the area and what it looks like to have a longer stay during the shoulder season here at Bar Run Golf and RV resort. When we return, we hear stories about memorable guests, how the golf course came to be, and what you can do when you are looking to plan your adventure in this area as well. Stay with us. Have you ever had a guest or a guest story that stuck with you?

Cris, Bar Run Anyway, this guy Steve, call him Steve. Oh, um, he did a lot of media based stuff. Him and his wife, they do full time rv'ers move around. He does a lot of like, uh, off road racing and stuff like that. So the off season stuff, he comes and does this, but he also promoted like Hulk Hogan's Beer, which is kind of cool. So last March, uh, we had massive amount of rain. We got flooded, RV park was fine, golf course was eighty five percent underwater. But they were landlocked. I mean, they became this became an island and they're out there and he's flying the drone. He was just happy flying his drone around, taking a bunch of pictures and stuff like that. And we couldn't get took three days for us to get him out. They didn't care like, all right, this is awesome.

Speaker 4 That is so much fun.

Cris, Bar Run Yeah. We were it was pretty. Yeah. That's pretty nuts.

Brooks, Host Has he come back.

Cris, Bar Run Yes, a couple of times. Yeah.

Brooks, Host And actually going back to beer, you had mentioned Hulk Hogan beer. but Bar Run has a partnership with a local brewery because you guys have your own kind of branded beer on property there that you guys pour. Tell me a little bit about that in that brewery and the relationship.

Cris, Bar Run So we have basically it's it's North forty. Then we have a relationship with, uh, they, they can some of two types of beer and they, uh, I p a and a Mexican lager for us, we call it the pin seeker and the crusher. So the loggers, the, the crusher and then the pin seekers, the, the IPA. So and we also have a relationship with Russell Winery. We have, uh, a bar run select, which is a Tempranillo. And we have, we have a white one as well.

Brooks, Host So, so you got it all. You got a white wine, you got a red wine, you got an idea, you got a look in there.

Cris, Bar Run Hey, that's one thing about this community. The community gets really comes together and really does a lot of good partnership. And Kelly Guido there, that's what he wants to do. Like during the flood, we had an outcry of support from businesses and local friends and family that just came in and helped us get rid of all the water and the sediment and all that stuff. It was very, very, very neat to see and very, very humbling that all these people came back and wanted to make sure everybody was good.

Brooks, Host So that's, that's that's amazing. Let me ask you this. Is there a misconception about RV resorts or even long term, you know, RV living that perhaps you wished more people understood?

Cris, Bar Run I would say that it really all, all ages, you know, do the RV it's not just for, you know, the more experienced people in life, it's more it's more elders. Yeah. Our elders. That's great. And our elders, I mean, I think it's, you know, it's something that I wish I got into a little bit sooner because it really is kind of neat. As you mentioned, you know, it's not just an RV, it's your home, you know, and I didn't realize that there are so many full time RVers. I mean, it is it's very popular and there's a ton of people that do that.

Brooks, Host Yeah. That's interesting. Well, let's transition and talk about the golf course because that's obviously kind of a big part of the bar run experience. How did golf become such an important piece of the property?

Cris, Bar Run They mined this property out that we sit on now. Well, my grandfather, he had a right in there what he wanted to do, I want to build a golf course. Didn't mean they had to. They could have done something else. But they're like, well, why not? Let's just let's do this. Let's just do his dream. And the youngest son, Brent, that he was, he's more the golfer. And he honestly didn't really know what they were going to have because it was just covered over with blackberries and a bunch of junk and yardage waste material back in there. So they brought in a Dan Hicks and the course designer, and he was like, I don't I don't know what we got. Let me, let me just play around with the dozer and figure out some stuff. And he came back a out a couple. Yeah, I think we could build up something. We did not know it was going to be as nice as it is, but it just kind of just kind of was like, oh yeah, just kind of worked out.

Brooks, Host I will say this when my son and I, he's fourteen, when he and I got out onto the course, we were like, oh, this is a nice, beautiful, wide open course. Yeah, except we lost a ton of golf balls playing all.

Speaker 4 Those.

Brooks, Host Holes. My son, uh, for whatever reason, he can hit, uh, pinhole size of water from wherever. So he made large donations to every single patch of water hazard there. I'm more of a beach guy. I love sand traps. But yeah, it was wild. We ended up having to. I was like, man, we gotta go buy more golf balls. I had to go get a ton more balls. It was crazy. It was kind of funny. What is your favorite part of the course? And if you could only play one hole, which one are you choosing? him?

Cris, Bar Run I like eighteen. Eighteen. Eighteen. It's easier, but it's a little bit I won't say easier. It's has a lot of teeth to it. But if you just hit it to, you know, lay up in the middle of the fairway up there, then you can really attack that pin. It's a great finishing. Oh, I actually wish we would switch eighteen and nine if they were in the two circles. Nines, a really hard hole, but eighteen is probably my favorite. I know it sets up for a draw and I don't hit a draw, but yeah.

Brooks, Host I remember if it was fourteen or fifteen, the one that's along the side of the road, kind of right in front of the clubhouse, I think that's fifteen, right?

Cris, Bar Run Fifteen.

Brooks, Host Yeah, yeah. I do have one piece of advice. You guys should put some netting along the side of the road there, because I think I hit one into the parking lot. I didn't hear the sound of glass breaking, but I had a mild panic attack.

Cris, Bar Run So we've got in golf balls into the into the pool.

Brooks, Host Yeah. So I just, you know, I think some netting along that side might be, uh. Friendly advice there. Um, tell me a bit about Dan Hixon.

Cris, Bar Run Dan Hixon? Yeah, he is, uh, he's a becoming a very big mainstay in a very sought after course architect in the Pacific Northwest. Uh, he did Bandon crossings. He did us. He did Sylvie's. Um, he's got a bunch of other. He's got a ton of other projects going. Super nice guy. Super amazing. In fact, he'll be down here the weekend after Labor Day. He'll be down. Uh, we do bull riding out in the field. And so he comes down for that.

Brooks, Host Really?

Cris, Bar Run Yeah.

Brooks, Host Is it just a bunch of local cowboys and bull riders coming?

Cris, Bar Run Oh, it's all over. It's like a semi-pro field of dreams. It's the Champions Tour.

Brooks, Host Is it a full rodeo or is it just bull riding? Are they going to know?

Cris, Bar Run It's just just bull riding. We do mutton busting, steer tying minister time. We do steer dressing and we do um mutton busting for the kids and they'll, they'll they'll buck some man, some for some steers. They'll, they'll buck some of the teenagers and stuff like that.

Brooks, Host And as you said, that's the weekend.

Cris, Bar Run Right after right after Labor Day, we have a field out there. We call it the Field of Dreams. Get out there. And it is a pretty big event. It's a it's a tour that travels around.

Brooks, Host I mean, are people then staying at the RV resort?

Cris, Bar Run Yeah, they'll stay in the RV resort. We turn that into a little town down there, uh, in the field. It's literally in the field. As you drove in and drove out, if you looked out there, you could you could see, I mean, if you knew what you're looking for. Oh, that's where it is. We left the big polls out there for the all the science to go on. And we make a big rodeo area down there bringing grandstands and all that.

Brooks, Host Yeah. That's fun. Well, let me ask you this now, what do you want bar run to become over the next, let's say three years, five years, whatever kind of what's the vision hopes for the future of bar run.

Cris, Bar Run Long term plan is we've got. We've got seventy four spaces. Uh, we just add another six, what we call overflow parking, but we got approved for one hundred and fifty to begin with. So where are the sand and gravel? Concrete plan is we are going to complete the other eighty some slot spaces over there up the river, which will be interesting and neat to see how we do that. Uh, in our intent is to add, you know, some pickleball courts, some other other amenities and things of that nature, but we want them to do what you did. Have a great relaxing time. Yeah. But I just want us to be like more of a continue on the path that we are of like being like destination type resort.

Brooks, Host And you are we went ahead and while we were there, we rebooked for next fourth of July. We were done. Like, here's my credit card. I will be back. I did change sites. I will say my one complaint isn't the right word. But in the. The campground. Getting out of that hot sun, it's difficult, you know? So like where we were, we were flying in the morning, but like after the day and after the pool, we were in the baking sun. So I was like, I'm going to switch sites to be on the other side of the street. So then my trailer kind of creates that shaded area for the afternoon. But there was no, you know, and I didn't want to set up a ten by ten tent or, you know, anyway, so that was the one thing. And that's obviously just in July and August, I'm sure during kind of the hot summer. So it's not like it's a big deal, but it was and complaints not the right word. I just was like, I need to get out of the sun for a little bit, especially after being, you know, at the.

Cris, Bar Run Oh no. Yeah, absolutely, I get that. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 4 Well, Chris.

Brooks, Host If I'm in Arvier listening to this episode right now and I've never been to Bar Run, what's the one thing you want me to understand about this place before I decide if it's for me.

Cris, Bar Run The one thing that we're family friendly. It's relaxing. You know, in and out of the season, you know, the in our shoulder season or whatnot, you absolutely get more you get more quiet and private. But I would say this is more like a family friendly family. I mean, we want the kids, we want the grandkids. We want all of that because, I mean, the ownership is very much into family.

Brooks, Host And it shows.

Cris, Bar Run Yeah. So I mean, it's all it's all about. I mean, we want it's really to say in a nutshell, I mean, hey, we are we want the family.

Brooks, Host So Chris, tell me, where can people come to find out more about Bar Run? Learn more about the RV resort, the golf experiences, follow along on socials to keep seeing the cool things you guys are doing there. Where can they get all of that information?

Cris, Bar Run three main things. We got our website bar run golf dot com. Uh, and we're also on Instagram and Facebook.

Brooks, Host And of course, I'm going to put all of those links to Bar Run and everything we talked about in the show notes. So you can find those over at rv dot com. Well, Chris, thank you so much for coming on today and talking with us about Bar Run. And I will say it was an incredible experience. And like I said, so much. So we'll see you next year for Fourth of July. And I meant to I forgot to mention too, if anybody's listening and they have their four legged friends, we brought our dogs, but we also brought a bunch of drugs for our dogs because it was Fourth of July and surprisingly, there were no fireworks. So we actually really appreciated that there wasn't a firework display. I know Roseburg and that time of year is also probably a big tinderbox. So, you know, I get all of that. But for those listening and thinking dogs and Fourth of July and whatever, we didn't need to drag our dogs. They didn't even know it was fantastic and we still had a great time celebrating America's two fiftieth. So it was a great experience.

Speaker 4 Right on.
